A shooting on a rural property has left one person in hospital and triggered a major police investigation.

Police were called to a Devereux Creek property, west of Mackay, in Queensland at about 10.30am on Tuesday morning following reports of a gunshot injury.

Police found a man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Paramedics were first called to a car on the Peak Downs Highway at Alexandria — the location where the emergency call originated.

Authorities later traced the incident to a property at Devereux Creek.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Investigations are continuing.
